If repayment, release, or write-off occurs on or after the original section 455 due date, relief cannot be given before nine months have ended after the accounting period containing that event.
Paying back the loan does not necessarily produce an immediate cash refund. HMRC's CTM61610 describes the same timing and the available claim routes.

Section 458 gives relief from all or a proportionate part of the section 455 charge when the loan is repaid or the debt is released or written off, on a claim.
The claim limit is four years from the end of the financial year containing the repayment, release, or write-off. Separate borrower tax can arise on release or write-off.
Exceptions and branches
- Anti-avoidance rules can disregard temporary repayments or apply to other extraction arrangements.
